Arthur Edgar Hekele, son of Joseph Alois and Anna Agnes (Seus) Hekele, was born September 7, 1917 in Claflin, Kansas. He registered for the draft October 16, 1940. At that time he was working on a farm in Barton County, Kansas. He was inducted into the Army February 17, 1941 and served as a Squad Leader in Company B, 320th Infantry Regiment. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge July 25, 1944. S/Sgt Arthur E Hekele was seriously wounded by a shell blast September 15, 1944 in the vicinity of Dombasle-sur-Meurthe, about 17 miles southeast of Nancy, France. He died of his wounds the same day. He is buried at Holy Family Cemetery, Odin, Kansas.
