William Tilry Kirby, son of John Shellie and Bertha Esther (Bradley) Kirby, was born April 14, 1924 in Randolph County, Alabama. He registered for the draft June 30, 1942 when he was 18 years old. He was inducted into the Army January 30, 1943 at Fort McClellan, Alabama and entered active service February 6, 1943. He joined Company E, 320th Infantry Regiment as a Rifleman from the 38th Replacement Battalion August 28, 1944 when the unit was at Courtnay, France. He was promoted to Sergeant, Squad Leader November 22, 1944. He was initially reported missing December 8, 1944 in the vicinity of Sarreguemines, France but returned to duty that same day. Sgt William T Kirby was wounded by shell fragments December 27, 1944 in the vicinity of Baschleiden, Luxembourg and died of his wounds that same day. He is buried at Rocky Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, New Hope, Alabama.
