Bronze Star Medal Citation

Staff Sergeant Emil F Koziol, 37034336, Infantry, United States Army, for heroic service in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States, in the vicinity of St Lo, Normandy, France on 12 July 1944. Sergeant Koziol was in charge of a mortar section assigned the mission of supporting the attack of the Third Battalion, 320th Infantry, against strongly held enemy positions on Hill 108. During an intense enemy artillery barrage concentrated on the area occupied by this section, the attacking infantry called for mortar fire. When the members of his section showed reluctance to leave their foxholes, Sergeant Koziol went forward alone and proceeded to place a mortar in action. Inspired by his example, the men immediately returned to their mortars and placed fire upon enemy targets in support of the attack. Sergeant Koziol was killed by enemy action during this operation. The heroic actions of Sergeant Koziol, his disregard for personal safety, and his zeal for the accomplishment of his mission, are in accord with the military traditions of the United States. Entered military service from Nebraska.
