Joseph Mihalich, son of Peter and Anna (Zarr) Mihalich, was born July 19, 1915 in Livingston, Illinois. He married Vera Wilson and the couple had 2 children, a son James and daughter Jo Ann. He registered for the draft October 16, 1940. At the time he was living in Wood River, Illinois and working at Western Cartridge in East Alton, Illinois. He was inducted into the Army April 27, 1944 and joined Company K, 320th Infantry Regiment as a Rifleman from the 38th Replacement Battalion November 17, 1944 when the unit was in the vicinity of Vannecourt, France. He was promoted to Private First Class and awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge December 1, 1944. Pfc Joseph Mihalich was reported missing January 5, 1945 in the vicinity of Harlange, Belgium about 6 miles southeast of Bastogne. He was later confirmed killed in action that same date. He is buried at Saint Joseph Cemetery, Alton Illinois.
