Joseph Robert Palumbo, son of Raffaele "Ralph" and Mary (Pescetto) Palumbo, was born February 8, 1923 in Akron, Ohio. He registered for the draft June 27, 1942. At the time he was working at Firestone Tire and Rubber Company in Akron. He was inducted into the Army March 17, 1943 at Fort Hayes, Ohio. He joined Company C, 320th Infantry Regiment from the 38th Replacement Battalion September 23, 1944 and served as a Rifleman. Before joining the 320th Infantry Regiment he served in an anti-aircraft unit. Pfc Joseph R Palumbo was seriously wounded in action November 9, 1944 in the vicinity of Foret De Chateau Salins, France. He was treated at the 110th Medical Battalion Clearing Station then transferred to the 60th Field Hospital. He died of his wounds the following day, November 10, 1944. He is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery, Akron, Ohio.
