HQ Company 2nd Battalion - 320th Infantry Regiment

Joseph Samuel Porter, son of Clyde Rankin and Hazel Ethel (Corson) Porter, was born December 7, 1923 in Zanesville, Ohio. He registered for the draft June 27, 1942. At that time he was working at the Weller Theatre in Zanesville. He was inducted into the Army July 17, 1943 at Columbus, Ohio, served as a Messenger in HQ Company 2nd Battalion, 320th Infantry Regiment, and landed at Omaha Beach in Normandy France July 6, 1944. Pfc Joseph S Porter was killed by shrapnel July 27, 1944 in the vicinity of St Lo, France and was posthumously awarded the Expert Infantryman Badge July 31, 1944. He is buried at Memorial Park Cemetery, Zanesville, Ohio.
