James William Richardson. son of Jesse Ashby and Maggie Alvirda (Turner) Richardson, was born April 20, 1921 in Bedford County, Virginia. He married Ruth Lorene Ragland June 6, 1941. He registered for the draft February 16, 1942. At the time he was living in Roanoke, Virginia and working at Merita Bakery. He was inducted into the Army July 10, 1943 at Roanoke and joined Company K, 320th Infantry Regiment from the 38th Replacement Battalion November 11, 1944. T/5 James W Richardson was killed in action by artillery shell shrapnel November 27, 1944 southeast of Metz, France. He is buried at Mountain View Cemetery, Vinton, Virginia.
