Pvt Alfred D Schmidt

Company L - 320th Infantry Regiment

Alfred Daniel Schmidt, son of Harry Herman and Margaret (Hauser) Schmidt, was born August 26, 1925 in Celestine, Indiana. He registered for the draft on his 18th birthday, August 26, 1943. At the time he was living in Birdseye, Indiana and working on his father's farm in Birdseye. He was inducted into the Army January 1, 1944 at Evansville, Indiana and received his training at Camp Blanding, Florida and Camp Van Dorn, Mississippi. After being transferred to Fort Meade, Maryland, he departed for the ETO in October 1944. He joined Company L, 320th Infantry Regiment from the 38th Replacement Battalion on November 17, 1944 and served as a Rifleman. Two days later on November 19th, he was seriously wounded by artillery shell fragments in the vicinity of Vannecourt, about 30 miles northeast of Nancy, France and was transferred to the 60th Field Hospital. He died of his wounds the following day, November 20, 1944. He was 19 years old at the time of his death.

Pvt Alfred D Schmidt is buried at Fairview Cemetery, Jasper, Indiana. The Army unit inscribed on his government provided headstone is incorrect. It lists him as having served in the 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division when it should read 320th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division. This error most likely occurred because the 1948 headstone application, filed when his remains were returned to the United States after the war, only listed "USAGF" (United States Army Ground Forces) as his unit of record. "32 Inf Reg" is hand-written on the application - omitting the "0" from 320 Infantry Regiment. The U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs will provide a replacement headstone at no cost, but the request for replacement must be submitted by a family member. If you are a family member of Pvt.
