Howard Ander Shaffer, son of John Harmon and Flora Alice (Clifford) Shaffer, was born January 15, 1915 in Clark County, Ohio. He married Mary Tatum June 17, 1935 in Lawrence, Ohio and the couple had 3 children; Thomas born 1936, Wanda Maxine born 1939, and Ada Mae born 1940. He registered for the draft October 16, 1940. At the time he was living in Friendship, Ohio and working at the Vulcan Corporation in Portsmouth, Ohio. He was inducted into the Army April 27, 1944 at Fort Thomas, Kentucky. He joined Company K, 320th Infantry Regiment from the 17th Replacement Battalion on November 19, 1944 and served as a Rifleman. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge and promoted to Private First Class December 1, 1944. Pfc Howard A Shaffer was killed in action by artillery shell fragments in the vicinity of Bliesbruck, France on December 12, 1944. He is buried at Stoney Run Cemetery, Friendship, Ohio.
