Robert William Smith, son of John and Claudia Smith, was born December 20, 1914, in Anoka, Minnesota. He registered for the draft on October 16, 1940, while living in Minneapolis. He joined Company C, 320th Infantry Regiment from the 38th Replacement Battalion on January 20, 1945 when the unit was in the vicinity of Metz, France. At that time, his Military Occupation Specialty (MOS) was 813 Transportation NCO, and was soon changed to 653 Squad Leader. He had been inducted into the Army several years earlier, though the exact date and details of his service prior to joining the 320th Infantry Regiment remain unknown. S/Sgt Robert W Smith was reported missing in action on February 6, 1945, during fighting near Dremmen, Germany. His status was later confirmed as killed in action on that date. He was posthumously awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge on February 11, 1945. He is buried at Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, Netherlands.
