Charles Richard Todd, son of Thomas Otis and Mary Catherine (McManus) Todd, was born November 8, 1923 in Seattle, Washington. He registered for the draft June 30, 1942. At that time he was 18 years old and working at the Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corporation in Seattle. He was inducted into the Army March 16, 1943 at Seattle, Washington. He joined Company H, 320th Infantry Regiment from the 92nd Replacement Battalion on July 24, 1944 when they were in the vicinity of St Lo, France. He was wounded in action September 30, 1944 near Gremecey, France but he remained on duty and was awarded a Purple Heart Medal for his wounds on October 16, 1944. Pfc Charles R Todd was killed in action November 12, 1944 in the vicinity of Foret De Chateau Salins, France. He is buried at Calvary Cemetery, Seattle, Washington.

During the course of an attack against the enemy in the * * * , Private Todd, a machine gunner, closely supported attacking riflemen despite the fact that he was under direct enemy observation and heavy mortar fire. On several occasions he set up his weapon ahead of the riflemen. He was killed by enemy shellfire while firing his weapon from an exposed position. His tenacity of purpose and aggressiveness contributed to the success of the attack. Entered military service from Washington.
