Company C - 320th Infantry Regiment

Claude Johnston Womble, son of Bennett Franklin and Hattie (Standridge) Womble, was born May 25, 1910 in Tellico Plains, Tennessee. He married Lola Ruth Breeden on August 12, 1932. His first wife passed away in 1938. He married his second wife, Annabelle Lee Clayton, on December 16, 1939. He registered for the draft October 16, 1940. At that time he was working at the Dixie Foundry Company in Cleveland, Tennessee. He was inducted into the Army January 13, 1943 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia and served as an Ammunition Handler in Company C, 320th Infantry Regiment. He was originally reported missing July 17, 1944. It was later confirmed that he had been killed in action by a bullet wound to his back on July 26, 1944 during the battle for St Lo, France. Pvt Claude J Womble is buried at Fort Hill Cemetery, Cleveland, Tennessee.
