Alexander Arkell: History
The Company
The business known as Alexander Arkell at 291 Oxford Street in London was established in late November 1867[i]. Prior to this Mr. Arkell was a partner in the Liddiard and Arkell ironmongers business in Hastings, East Sussex, a town 65 miles southeast of London along the southern coast of England. The partnership between the two men was dissolved on November 7, 1867[ii] and the Hasting business was carried on by Mr. James Edward Liddiard alone. Within a couple weeks Mr. Arkell opened his new business in London called The Rimlock as seen the 1870[iii] advertisement pictured here which contains a note at the bottom dated November 1867 mentioning his earlier business with Mr. Liddiard in Hastings. The first city directory the company appeared in was 1870[iv] where it was listed as “Alexander Arkell, wholesale ironmonger & factor, saw, file & tool dealer, 291 Oxford street W”. At the time an ironmonger was “a person or store selling hardware such as tools and household implements”.[v] Before 1880[vi] the firm expanded to include operations at 293 Euston Road NW as well as at Oxford Street and was listed in an 1880[vii] directory as a “wholesale & retail ironmonger & cutler & tool chest manufacturer”. Unfortunately, the business failed at the end of October of 1879[viii], too late in the year to be remove from the 1880 city directory. One bankruptcy notice[ix] listed Alexander Arkell as an ironmonger from 291 Oxford Street and 12 Fernhead Road[x], Paddington. During the bankruptcy court hearing held in November 1879[xi] the company’s debts were listed as £3,000 of which £1,100 were secured, and the assets value was estimated at £250.
Only one Avery style needle case has been found with the Arkell name. The Picnic Basket pictured here has the full company name and address stamped on the bottom[xii] “Alex. Arkell The Rimlock 291 Oxford St W”. This design was registered in 1875 by the Birmingham die sinker and stamper Buncher and Haseler.
The Arkell Owners
(Note: This history of Alexander Arkell who was born in Kidderminster, Worcestershire is complicated by the fact that he seems to disappear from the London area around 1880 and then a man with the same name and a different wife reappears in 1891 in the Liverpool area. At first glance one would assume these were two different men with the same name, however, according to records available on Ancestry.com, there appears to be only one man named Alexander Arkell in the UK during those years who was born in Kidderminster around 1835. Also, there was no person named Alex Bathe born around 1841 in Kidderminster found in any records other than the 1881 census. Although his name, age and birthplace in 1891 does not match with the Alexander who was in London from 1861 until around 1880, the name, age and birthplace in the 1901 census does match, indicating the 1891 census taker either made several errors or the information provided to the census taker was incorrect. Also, most of the Alex Bathe information in the 1881 census matches with most of the information in 1901, Alexander’s forename and birthplace, information about his second wife, and his youngest son’s name, age and birthplace. Additionally, his occupation matches several times. Unless additional information is discovered in the future, it seems most likely that Alexandra left his first wife sometime around 1879/1880. He then lived for a few years in the London area with his mistress Kate Bathe, who was born in the London area, using her surname in the 1881 census, before they moved to the Liverpool area. When he learned his wife passed away in 1895, he then married Kate a few weeks later.)
Alexander Arkell was the second son of Samuel Arkell and Margaret Hendry. What follows in this paragraph is information about his parents and five siblings. His parents were married in 1832 in Kidderminster, Worcestershire, 127 miles northwest of London and 19 miles southwest of Birmingham. Samuel and Margaret had 6 children born there: John Lewis, Alexander, Ann, James, Thomas and Elizabeth. The Arkell family remained in Kidderminster where Samuel worked as a carpet weaver until around 1857 when their son Thomas died that year of tuberculosis[xiii] at age 16. “In the early 18th century, carpet weaving was introduced to Kidderminster, and this rapidly became the staple trade of the town.”[xiv] Sometime between 1857 and 1861 Samuel, Margaret and their son James moved to the London area and at first settled on University Street in St. Pancreas where Samuel worked as a porter. By 1881 Samuel and Margaret were caring for their granddaughter Florence Ingram as both of her parents died shortly after her birth. That year they resided at a workhouse on Stanhope Street in St. Pancras and Samuel was working as a draper’s assistant. Margaret died there in 1884 at age 72 and Samuel died there eight years later at age 84 in 1892. Exactly what happen to their eldest son John Lewis Arkell who was born in 1833 is unclear as no records other than his baptism have been found. Their eldest daughter Ann, born in 1836, also lived in the London area for a period of time as she married Frederick John Fildes there at the Strand in 1861. The middle son James was born in 1838 and spent his entire adult life working as an engineer’s pattern maker in the London area. He married Elizabeth Plummer in 1862 at the Strand and they had one child: Arthur James Arkell. James died in 1918 in Islington at age 80. Samuel and Margaret Arkell’s youngest daughter Elizabeth, who was born in 1843, moved to the London area where she married Charles Ingram in 1872 at Westminster. They had one child, Florence Louise Ingram, born in 1875 who never got to know her parents as they both died before she was 3 years old. When Elizabeth Ingram’s probate was settled after her death in 1878, her brother Alexander Arkell was listed as the sole executor.
Alexander Arkell was born c1835 in Kidderminster and was baptized there that year at St. Mary’s. He spent his early years with his parents and by age 16 was working as a carpet weaver. At some point between 1851 and 1856 he moved to the London area where he married Mary Ann Palmer at the beginning of 1857. How the couple met is unclear, especially since Mary Ann was born in Topsham, Devon a town 174 miles southwest of London near Exeter. Most likely they met each other while living in the London area. After their marriage they settled in the Finsbury section of London just northeast of St. Paul’s Cathedral for a few years before moving to Fernhead Road in Paddington by 1871. Alexander and Mary Ann had 2 children between 1862 and 1865, Basil Alexander who was born in Shoreditch and Florence Naomi who was born in Hastings. The Arkell family presumably lived for a couple years in the Hasting area as that was where Alexander and his former partner had an ironmongery business. At first Alexander worked as an ironmonger’s assistant, however by 1871 he was an ironmonger employing 5 men. In 1877[xv] he was listed as “Alexander Arkell, Esq, 291 Oxford Street, W.” one of 10 directors of the British Alliance Assurance Corporation (Limited) which was reorganized in 1876.
After his ironmongery business failed in 1879 not much information about Alexander Arkell in the London area has been found except that he was listed in an 1880[xvi] electoral register as Alexander Arkell of 293 Euston Rd, St. Pancras, Marylebone. His wife Mary Ann was living at Great Coram Street in the Bloomsbury section of London, just north of the British Museum, in 1881 with their 2 children, working as a lodging housekeeper, but where was Alexander? It seems most likely that Alexander and Mary Ann separated sometime between 1871 and 1880 and Alexander established a relationship with another woman named Kate Bathe. Alexander and Kate were living together in the St. John Hampstead section of London when their son Alexander Ewart Bathe was born in 1880. According to the child’s birth certificate his parents were Alexander Bathe and Kate Bathe formerly Bathe, however the information was provided by Alexander who apparently choose to use his mistress’s surname. In the 1881 census he was again listed with his mistress’s surname and his age and occupation do not match earlier records. He was listed that year as Alex Bathe age 40 a hardware commercial agent with wife Kate and son Alex E. age 18 months. However, ten years later when the child was baptized, his parents were listed as Alexander and Kate Arkell. And how do we know this wasn’t the son of another couple with those names? Because the son’s middle name was Ewart, a very unique name.
Alexander, Kate and their son left the London area sometime between 1881 and 1884 and their second child Elsie Norah was born in Doncaster in 1884, 165 miles north of London. Evidently after they left the London area they decide to use Alexander’s surname, because all records after 1881 have Arkell as the surname. By 1890 the family was living in the Liverpool area because their two children were baptized at Stoneycroft, a district of east Liverpool. In 1891 the family was living in West Derby, 218 miles northwest of London, a suburb of Liverpool where Alexander was again working as an ironmonger’s assistant although he was listed as a shopman on his children’s baptism records. Alexander’s actual wife Mary Ann remained in Bloomsbury, London until her death in 1895 at age 60. When her probate was settled shortly after her death she was listed as the wife of Alexander Arkell. Within weeks of learning that she died, Alexander married Kate Bathe in West Derby in 1895. By 1901 Alexander, Kate and their two children moved to Everton, which was closer to central Liverpool and Alexander became a cutlery traveler. Four years later in 1905 he died there at age 70 and was buried at a local cemetery. To date his probate has not been found. Kate died two years later in 1907 at age 56 of thyroid disease and was buried next to him
Alexander and Mary Ann Arkell’s son Basil Alexander Arkell was born in 1862 in the Shoreditch section of London. He married in 1894 in the Stoke Newington section of north London and followed the same career path as his father becoming an ironmonger’s assistant. Basil remained in the London area and died there at the rather young age of 41 of tuberculosis[xvii] in 1903. Alexander and Mary Ann Arkell’s daughter Florence Naomi Arkell was born in 1865 in Hastings. At age 23 Florence married George Ussher an ironmonger’s assistant in 1888 in the Bloomsbury district of west London. Alexander’s son by his second wife, Alexander Ewart Arkell, was born in Hampstead, London in 1880. He became a warehouseman and salesman specializing in the sale of India rubber. He married in 1911 in Liverpool and died there in 1932. Alexander’s youngest daughter Elsie Norah remained in the Liverpool area and died there in 1914 of a urinary bladder infection[xviii] at age 27.
