Edward Cox (aka Edward Cox & Sons): History

The Company

This firm was established by Edward Burton Cox sometime between 1845 and 1850.  It was first listed in a London City directory in 1850[1] as Edward Cox, linen draper at 2 Haberdasher’s Walk in Hoxton.  The business remained at this address until sometime between 1860[2] and 1865[3] when it moved to 53 Westbourne Grove in Kensington.   By 1875[4] the business expanded and although it was still named Edward Cox, it was now listed as a silk mercer at 51 & 53 Westbourne Grove and also at 49 & 50 Kensington Garden Square, both in Kensington.  Sometime between 1875 and 1880, two sons of Edward Burton Cox, Edward Joshua Cox and Ebenezer Cox, joined their father in his business and they became partners as did another man named John Edward Stafford.  By 1880 the firm was known as Edward Cox, Sons & Stafford and it was recorded in an 1880[5] London directory as Cox, Sons & Stafford at 59 & 60 Westbourne Grove, 58 Queens Road and 49 Kensington Garden Square.  Also, that year Mr. Stafford was listed separately in the 1880[6] directory as “John E. Stafford, silk mercer, see Cox, Sons & Stafford”.  In 1881[7] there was a fire at their Westbourne Grove shop.  Some of the merchandise that was saved from the fire was slightly affected by smoke and therefore was offered for sale to the public at salvage prices.  The damage done to the building and stock was to the extent of several thousand pounds but fortunately both the building and the stock were insured.  A year later the partnership of Edward Cox, Sons & Stafford, silk mercers and drapers at Westbourne Gove and in Kensington Gardens Square and Brighton was dissolved in 1882[8] and the business was carried on by Edward Burton Cox and his two sons. It was listed as Edward Cox & Sons in 1885[9].  Unfortunately, the business went bankrupt two years later in 1887[10] and was listed as follows in a local newspaper

FAILURE OF A LONDON DRAPER. - The Chief Official Receiver has appointed a special manager under the failure of Edward Cox & Sons of Westbourne Grove and Chelsea, drapers, trading at the latter place under the style of Day, Peters, & C.  The joint liabilities are returned at about £30,000 and the assets at £14,000.  It was stated that Ebenezer Cox, a junior partner, had lost from £6,000 to £8,000 by betting.”

The Cox Owners

The Edward Burton Cox who founded this company was the son of George Cox and Christiana Cussens.  His parents were married in 1809 in the Weston section of Bath, Somerset, 108 miles west of London and his father was a widower at the time of their marriage.  George and Christiana lived in the Bath area for a few years and had at least one child born there: Christiana c1814.  At some point prior to 1819 the Cox family moved to the London area where they had at least 2 more children between 1819 and 1821: Joseph and Edward Burton.   Because the Cox surname is quite common in both the Bath and London areas, limited information has been found about this Cox family.  By 1841 they were living in the Chelsea area of London and George’s occupation was listed as ind.  What that abbreviation means is unknown.  That year Edward Burton Cox and his sister Christiana with her husband William Denny and their daughter were all living with George and Christiana.  What happened to George after 1841 is unclear as he does not appear in later censuses with his wife.  George’s wife, Christiana, was living in the St. Giles in the Fields, Finsbury section of London with her son Joseph in 1851 who was working as a haberdasher employing 4 men.  Then in 1861 Christiana was listed as a widow and was living at Haberdashers Walk in the Towers Hamlet, Shoreditch section of London where she had 5 assistants, 2 apprentices and a servant.  By 1871 she was residing with her son Edward Burton and his family in Kensington.  Two years later in 1873 Christiana died in Ealing at age 93 and was buried at the Ealing & Old Brentford Cemetery.  Her daughter Christiana Denny died less than two months later and was buried in the same cemetery.

Edward Burton Cox, who appears to be the youngest son of George and Christiana Cox, was born c1821 in Chelsea. At age 20 in 1841 he was living with his parents and working as a clerk.  He spent the next 10 years working as hosier at first at his business on Haberdasher Walk in Tower Hamlets where he was living in 1851 with 3 assistants and his niece Hannah Denny. It seems possible that his mother joined this business in some way as she was living on this same street ten years later in 1861.  Edward married Margarette Harriett Eliza Cooke at St. Giles in London in 1851 and they had 10 children born between 1852 and 1866: Edward Joshua, Ebenezer, Theophilus, Ruth Mary, Esther Miriam, Frederick John, Theodore James, Lyndia Margaret, Alice Emily and Florence Kate.  By 1861 Edward and his family moved to Westbourne Grove in Kensington where he established his linen drapery business and where he was listed as a hosier, glover and haberdasher.  The Cox family moved to another area in Kensington and by 1871 he was listed as having private property.  In 1881 Edward and his daughter Ruth traveled to Brighton while the rest of the family remained at their new residence in the Ealing section of west London.  Perhaps he went to Brighton for business purposes because he had a shop there around this time.  For most of his life Edward was consistently listed as a hosier, draper, linendraper, silk mercer or haberdasher although in his later years he was listed as a landowner or living on private means indicating he attained a certain degree of wealth.  Margarette died at their home in Ealing in 1885 at age 54 and was buried at the Ealing & Old Brentford Cemetery.  George later moved to Highbury in the Islington section of central London where 5 of his adult children lived with him.  He died there in 1895 at age 75 and was buried at the Ealing & Old Cemetery.  His probate has not been found.  Of the 5 sons of Edward and Margarette Cox, the 2 eldest, Edward Joshua and Ebenezer, joined their father’s business and the 3 youngest, Theophilus, Frederick John and Theodore James pursued other careers.  After attending Mill Hill Grammar School in the Hendon section of London, Theophilus who was born in 1855, immigrated to Australia where he died in 1908.  Fredrick John, born in 1860. became an engineer and Theodore James, who was born in 1862, spent his life working as a bank clerk.

Edward Joshua Cox was born in 1852 in Hoxton, Shoreditch, the eldest son of Edward Burton Cox.  At some point in the late 1870’s he joined his father’s business as a partner, a position he held until the company was dissolved in 1887.  He was listed in 1881 as a silk mercer and in 1891 as a manufacturer.  Edward Joshua lived with his parents and after his father’s death in 1895 he moved to his brother’s home in Highbury where he spent the rest of his life.  From 1901 until at least 1911 he worked as a secretary while living with his brother Theodore who was the head of household with 3 of his sisters.  It seems a bit odd that Edward Joshua, who was 10 years older than his brother Theodore, was not the head of household during those years.  Edward Joshua never married.  He died in 1923 in Islington at age 71 and was buried at the Ealing & Old Brentford Cemetery.

The second son of Edward Burton Cox and Margarette Cooke was Ebenezer Cox who was born in Hoxton in 1853.  When he married Ann Maud Holman at St. Mary in Ealing in 1878, Ebenezer was listed as silk mercer.  Then in 1881 he was listed as a draper employing 8 persons presumably having joined his father’s business where he was a junior partner.  Ebenezer and Ann had 5 children between 1878 and 1893: Elsie Maud, Florence Ada Jane, Freda Evelyn Margaret, Alice Winifred who died shortly after birth and George Stanley Holman.  The family lived in Hammersmith for a few years, then settled in Ealing were they spent the rest of their lives.  Clearly Ebenezer had a gambling problem during the years he worked for his father as that is how he was listed in several newspapers during the company’s bankruptcy process.  Apparently, he learned how to overcome that bad habit because by 1891 Ebenezer was working as a manufacturer of fancy white wood cabinets and bracket wood, whereas by 1901 he was listed as an accountant, a position he continued to have in 1911.  He died at his home in Ealing in 1930 at age 77 and his wife Ann died there 7 years later in 1937 at age 83.  The following story regarding Ebenezer was published in 1931[12] shortly after his death:

“Mr. Ebenezer Cox, who die on Christmas Day, had crowded many and very varied experiences into a long life, and they were not all of a sort to give him much satisfaction in retrospect, but I remember him best during what was, perhaps, his best period, when as a young man, he was the enthusiastic honorary choirmaster of the Ealing Wesleyan Church, with his brother Edward as organist.  He lived then on Ealing Common.  Later he moved to Grove Park, Chiswick, and there he associated himself with the Church of England.  Not many years ago he called on me to ask a favour.  “After all” he said,  it wasn’t my fault you could not sing, and I did let you stay in the choir because you didn’t want to sit in a pew with your people.”  He could be engaging.  Perhaps that was his weakness. Are People Kinder?”
