Samuel
Fisher (aka Samuel Fisher & Son and S. Fisher Limited): History
The
Company[1]
Samuel Fisher established his business as a
dressing case maker and cutler at 188 Strand in 1838[2]
at age 25. He was listed for the first
time in an 1839[3] London
city directory. Dressing cases were
originally made for the upper-class because they liked to travel and needed a
way to easily transport clothing and other essential items when they were away
from home. With the introduction of the
middle class during the late Industrial Revolution, dressing cases became more
popular as more people traveled but the ones produced for the middle class were
not as fancy. At first Samuel Fisher and
his family lived at the same address as his business but by 1851[4]
their residence moved to another place in London. The 1851[5]
drawing seen here on the right, with the Fisher business on the right side, shows what it
looked like at that time. Samuel spent
his entire life working in his dressing case business which over time became
quite successful. By age 21 Thomas
Stennett joined the Fisher business as a worker and in 1841[6]
was listed as a shopman and later a shopman manager or foreman. Mr. Stennett worked and lived at the 188
Strand building with his family for over 40 years. By 1856[7]
the Fisher business was also making portmanteaus, “a large trunk or suitcase,
typically made of stiff leather and opening into two equal parts”[8]. In an 1865[9]
city directory the firm was listed as a “dressing case, cutlery & dispatch
box manfr, bag and portmanteau maker & ivory
turner”. Whereas in city directories the
business was consistently listed as Samuel Fisher at 188 Strand until the
1880’s[10],
all of the firm’s advertisements were simply listed
during that time as S. Fisher[11]
as seen in the one pictured
[12] here in the left. From 1856 through 1875 the company was
occasionally listed in directories with additional shops at 211 Strand[13]
and 284 Regent Street[14]. In 1867[15]
the firm’s shopman, Thomas Stennett, registered a patent for an improvement to
dressing cases.
Several other family members also worked
in the Fisher family business. Samuel
Fisher’s eldest son, Robert Edward Fisher, joined his father as an assistant
around 1861and became a manager by 1871.
Then the name of the business changed, and it was listed as Samuel
Fisher & Son in city directories from at least 1880[16]
until at least 1890[17]
indicating the firm was owned by the father and son. After his father’s death in 1890, Robert
became the company’s leader and by 1895[18]
changed its name back to Samuel Fisher, apparently because that was the name
most of its customers recognized. In
1901 Robert was the managing director and a couple years later, when the firm
became a limited liability company around 1904[19],
he became the director, a position he held until at least 1911. The founder’s other two sons, Charles Alfred Fisher and Henry Massey Fisher, worked for the firm during
the last quarter of the 19th century. At
first Charles was a shopman who later became a clerical clerk until his death
in 1893. Then his eldest son, Charles
Theodore Fisher, took over his father’s position as clerk. Henry also worked as a clerk or assistant for
a few years until he left the London area sometime presumably in the 1890’s. In addition to the Fishers, Thomas Stennett’s
son started working for the company as a clerk when he was 14 years old in
1871. He continued to work there for at
least 40 years and became a manager after his father’s death in 1895. Unfortunately, the business went through some
difficult times during the early 20th century and it
was liquidated in 1912[20].
To
date the only Avery style needle case stamped with the Fisher name is the
Horseshoe which was registered by the Birmingham company Buncher & Haseler
in 1874. Additional photos of it can be
found in the Images section of this chapter.
The
Fisher Owners[21]
Samuel
Fisher was born c1813 in Highgate, a suburb of north London about 4 miles from
the city center. Not much is known about
his early life because the Fisher surname is quite common in the UK and little
evidence has been found proving who his parents or siblings were. In 1837 Samuel married Mary Smith at St. John
Hampstead, a church near his home. By
1838 they were living at 188 Strand where Samuel had a shop and worked as a
cutler. As was common for workers who
lived in that area of London, Samuel’s workshop was most likely on the ground
floor and the family’s residence was on the upper stories. Samuel and Mary had 5 children while living
there from 1838 to 1845: Mary Elizabeth who died at age 4, Robert Edward, Henry
Tennyson, Ethel Ann and Frederick William. All of these
children were baptized at St. Clement Danes in Westminster, the church next to
their home. Although the family
residence changed over the years, Samuel continued to have his workshop at 188
Strand for the remained of his life and worked there as a dressing case
maker. Sometime between 1845 and 1846
the family moved to Beckenham, Kent, a town in the Bromley section of south
London, approximately 11 miles south of the city center. They stayed in Beckenham for only a few years
and 2 additional children were born there: Charles Alfred and Mary Louisa.
By 1850 the Fisher’s moved their residence
to Willesden, an area 5 miles northwest of central London where 6 more their
children were born between 1850 and 1860: Edwin John, Amy Elizabeth, Harold
James who died at age 14, Marion Harriet, Herbert Massey
and Francis Walter. Samuel’s dressing
case business became very successful as he was listed as a gentleman in 1857
and 1860 on two of the children’s baptismal records. Around 1862 they moved again, this time to
Upper Hamilton Terrace about 3 miles north of the city center where their last
child was born: Constance Julia. In
1871 the Fisher family was living in Penge in the Croydon section of south
London, 8 miles south of the city center where they remained for at least 10
years. Sometime before 1885 Samuel and
Mary moved to neighboring Anerley Park.
Mary died there in 1885 at age 69 followed 5 years later by Samuel who
died in 1890 at age 77. He was buried at
the Camden Cemetery and left an estate of £3,107 (£254,927[22]
today) that was proved by his sons Robert Edward and Charles Alfred who both
worked in the family business. Of Samuel
and Mary’s seven surviving sons, four pursed careers in other areas. The second and third sons, Henry Tennyson and Frederick William, became ironmongers, the
fifth son, Edward John, became a manager at a printing works and the youngest
son, Francis Walter, became a clergyman.
Robert
Edward Fisher, the eldest son of Samuel and Mary Fisher, was born in 1839 at
188 Strand and was baptized at St. Clement Danes in Westminster. By 1861 he was working for his father as an
assistant. In 1869 he married Mary Ann
White at St. Peter in Croydon and they lived at a house in Penge not far from
his parents. By 1871 he was listed as
manager of a dressing case manufacturer most likely his father’s
businesses. Robert and Mary Ann had 2
children born there: Mary and Kate. At
age 32 Mary Ann died in 1878 in Steyning, a town 50 miles south of London near
the coast, presumably while vacationing in that area or visiting friends. After her death Robert and his two daughters
lived with his parents for a few years then he married his second wife Rosa
Louisa Friend in 1886 in Eastbourne, Sussex, who was 15 years younger than
him. The family continued to live in the
London area, a few years in the southern sections of Streatham, Croydon and
Wandsworth and a few years in the western section of Chiswick. Robert and Rosa had 4 children between 1887
and 1892: Robert Harold, Elsie Rosa, Edward Cyril and
Ernest Edward who died shortly after his birth.
It appears as though Robert worked in the
Fisher family business all of his life.
In 1881 he was listed as a dressing case maker and in 1891 as a bag and
case maker and shopkeeper. By 1901 he
was the managing director of a company and by 1911 the director of a limited
company that produced leather bags & etc.
Apparently, he took over the family business after his father’s death in
1890 and remained in that position until the company was liquidated in
1912. At some point prior to 1924 Samuel
and Rosa moved to Tooting, Surrey in the Wandsworth section of south London where
Rosa died that year at age 71. After her
death Robert moved to neighboring Balham, Surrey where he died five years later
in 1928 at age 89. His estate, valued at
£399, was passed to his
eldest son Harold Robert and his uncle Reverend Francis Walter Fisher. The eldest son Robert Harold, who went by the
name Harold Robert, became a motor engineer.
Information about Robert’s youngest surviving son Edward Cyril has not
been found as there are many individuals in the London area with the name
Edward Fisher and not enough information connecting them to this Fisher
family.
The
fourth son of the founder of the Fisher dressing case business was Charles
Alfred Fisher who was born in 1846 in Beckenham, Kent. His parents Samuel and Mary Fisher returned
to St. Clement Danes for his baptism shortly after his birth. Evidently the family was living in both
places, Beckenham, Kent for his birth and 188 Strand according to his baptism
record. Perhaps they were in the process
of moving and were going back and forth.
In 1871 Charles was living with his parents but was listed with no occupation. In 1874 he married Sarah Jane Williams in
Abingdon, Berkshire, 57 miles west of London where Sarah was born. After their marriage they returned to the
London and by 1875 were living in the Edmonton area of north London where their
first 2 children were born between 1875 and 1879: Charles Theodore and Sidney
Northcourt who died in early 1881. Later
in 1881 they moved to Camberwell in south London where they remained for a number of years and where their last 3 children were born
between 1881-1890: Arthur Douglas who died a few months after his birth,
Percival Duncan and Dorothy Leila who died shortly after birth. Charles worked in his father’s business and
in 1881 was listed as a shopman in the leather trade as the business produced
leather bags. In 1891 he was listed as a
clerical clerk in a retail fancy shop which matches with how he was listed in
his father’s probate as a commercial clerk at 188 Strand. Charles died three and a half years after his
father in 1893 at Clapham Park, Surrey, another section of south London, at age
47 and left an estate of £1,526
to his wife Jane. After his death Jane
moved to neighboring Upper Tooting where she continued to live until her death
there in 1921 at age 72. Her estate of £1,443 went to her eldest son
Charles Theodore Fisher a commercial clerk and Thomas Worden Lenton a
jeweler. The son Charles Theodore, who
was born in 1875, most likely worked as a clerk in the Fisher family business
for a few years as he was listed in 1901 as a clerk and bag maker worker and in
1911 as a ledger clerk for a dressing case manufacturer, most likely for his
uncle Robert. The only other surviving
child of Charles and Sarah, Percival Duncan was working as a mechanical engineer in 1901. Percival married Bertha Sarah Saunders in
1907 in Worcester and they immigrated to New Zealand by 1911 where he worked as
a motor mechanic.
The
only other son of the founder of the Fisher dressing case business known to
have worked in the family business was Herbert Massey Fisher. He was born in 1858 in Willesden, the sixth
son of Samuel and Mary Fisher. It looks
like Herbert traveled to New Zealand sometime in the early 1880’s which could
explain why he was not found in the 1881 UK census. By 1890 he was back in England where he
married Delories Jeannie Valburge, who was five years older than him, at St.
Clement Danes in Westminster. Herbert
was listed as a clerk living at Strand in his marriage record indicating he was
working at his father’s business. In
1891 Herbert and Delories were living in the Lewisham section of south London
and he was working as a dressing bag maker’s assistant presumably for his
brother Robert who became the business leader after their father’s death in
1890. What happened to Herbert between
1892 and 1931 in unclear as he has not been found in the 1901 or 1911
censuses. Evidently at some point he
moved to Australia where he became a fruit grower. Herbert returned to the UK sometime around
1932 as he married his second wife that year, Nora Margaretta Mary Newton who
was 24 years his junior, at St. Peter in South Wimbledon. Within weeks of their marriage, they returned
to Australia for a few years. By 1939
they were back in the UK and lived in the town of Paignton, Devon along the
coast near Torquey, an area known as the English Riviera[23],
191 miles southwest of London. In the
1939 Register Herbert was listed as a retired fruit farmer and his birthdate
was recorded as November 28, 1857 which matches his
birth certificate. Herbert died there 7
years later in 1946 at age 88 leaving an estate of £634 to his wife and nephew Charles Theodore
Fisher. At some point Nora moved to Dry
Drayton, a village near Cambridge. She
died in 1971 at age 89 at the hospital in neighboring Fulbourn
and left an estate valued at £4,563.
Other
Fisher Company Workers[24]
Thomas Stennett was born c1817 and was
baptized that year at Spitalfields Christ Church about a mile north of the
Tower of London. He was the son of a
butcher named Joseph Stennett and Ann Stennett of Red Lion Court. By the time Thomas was 21 years old in 1841,
he was living at 188 Strand and working as a shopman at the Fisher family’s
dressing case business. Later that year
he married Grace Keyworth at St. Mary Whitechapel in the Tower Hamlets section
of northeast London. After their
marriage they lived at 188 Strand where they had 7 children between 1842 and
1858: Joseph, Emma, Thomas who died at age 1, Sarah, Ann, George
and Louisa. The Stennett family
continued to live there until sometime between 1881 and 1888 when they moved to
Hackney, a section of northeast London about 1 mile from 188 Strand. During their 40 years living at the Strand,
Thomas was consistently listed as a shopman, manager shopman to a dressing case
maker or a foreman indicating he worked for the Fisher business there and his
family lived on the upper floors. His
wife Grace died in Hackney in 1888 at age 72.
By 1891 Thomas was living with his daughter Sarah’s family in Hackney
where her husband, Joseph P. Pedgrift, worked as a
commercial clerk. Thomas died there in
1895 at age 78 and left as estate valued at £1,574 to his son George Stennett a salesman. Further evidence that Thomas worked for the
Fisher family business can be seen below in the 1867 dressing bag invention he
registered in 1867.
Thomas’s
youngest son, George Stennett who was born in 1856, must have learned the
dressing case business from his father while the Stennett family lived at the
Strand. At age 14 in 1871 he was listed as a commercial
clerk and by 1881 at age 24 a shopman.
During the 1880’s, after his parents moved to Hackney, George continued
to live at 188 Strand and was listed as a dressing leather bag maker’s
assistant in 1891, presumably taking over the position his father’s held
earlier in the company. In 1901 he was
listed as a manager of a leather goods manufactory and in 1911 as a manager of
a dressing bag maker indicating he remained with the Fisher business until the
company was liquidated.
