Charles Rimmer (aka C. Rimmer): History

The Company

The firm known as Charles Rimmer appears to have been established sometime between 1854[1] and 1866 by a man named Charles Rimmer.  The first time it was listed in a city directory was in 1866[2]  where it was listed as Charles Rimmer needle manufacturer on Priory Street in Alcester, Warwickshire.  Alcester is a town about 8 miles southeast of the town of Redditch, the English needle and fishhook manufacturing center during the Victorian Era.  Alcester also had several other individuals and companies involved in the needle and fishhook trades.  Charles’s father, Thomas Rimmer, had a business in Alcester in 1866[3] known as John Rimmer & Son at Globe Works, needle and fishhook manufacturers.  The John Rimmer & Son company must have been well known as it participated in the 1853[4] New York Exhibition in the USA and the 1855[5] Universal Exhibition in Paris, France.  At some point between 1868[6] and 1871, possible shortly after his father’s death in 1870[7], Charles moved his family and business to the town of Studley, 4.3 miles north of Alcester and 3.5 miles southeast of Redditch.  The firm was listed in 1871[8] as “Charles Rimmer manufacturer of drilled and egg-eyes needles, sewing machine needles, pack, sail, mattress, and upholsterers needles, knitting pins, fish hooks, fishing tackle, and boatswains’ stores, for home and all foreign markets”.  By 1881[9] the company was located at Alcester Road in Studley and employed 22 men and 12 women indicating it was a fairly large business.

Apparently, Charles turned over his needle manufacturing business to his wife or son sometime between 1900 and 1901[10] as the last time Charles appeared in a city directory was 1900.  After Charles’s death in 1904[11], his only son John Charles Steward Rimmer, who worked from 1881 until 1901[12] as a needle clerk presumably in his father’s company, appears to have taken over his father’s needle manufacturing business.  The first time John was listed as a needle manufacturer employer was in 1911[13] and the firm continued to be listed as Charles Rimmer in a city directory in 1916[14].  The last time the business was recorded in city directories was in 1924[15], however a needle manufacturer named Jn. Charles Rimmer was listed in Studley in the 1928[16] city directory.  It seems most likely that John changed the name of the company at some point between 1924 and 1928.  Apparently, John retired from the business shortly after 1928 as the firm was no longer listed in 1936[17] and John was recorded as a retired needle manufacturer by 1939[18].  The business was either sold to another party or ceased to exist, possibly because John’s only son pursued a career in a different trade.

The Owners[19]

Thomas Rimmer was the father of Charles Rimmer.  Thomas was born c1802/03 and baptized in 1811 in Alcester, the son of John and Charlotta Rimmer.  According to an article in an 1871/72[20] trade journal and an advertisement in 1873[21] Thomas’s father, John Rimmer, established his needle making business in 1780 or 1785 which is unlikely as he would have been only 8 to 13 years old during those years because he was born c1772.  It seems much more likely that John started working as a needle maker during one of those years.  This Rimmer business was first listed in a city directory in 1821[22] as John Rimmer needle manufacturer at Bleachfield in Alcester.  By 1835[23] the business was listed as John Rimmer & Son.  At some point between 1821 and 1835 Thomas Rimmer joined his father John in the needle trade and became a partner in the business.  When John Rimmer died in 1838 of obstruction of the bowels, he left part of his estate and business to his son Thomas who he named in his will as his business partner.  Both John and Thomas spent their entire lives working as needle and fishhook makers or manufacturers.

Thomas Rimmer married Mary Ann Perkins in Alcester in 1825 and they had 6 children born there between 1826 and 1838:  Charles, Mary Ann, William, Sarah, Eliza and Emma who died shortly after her birth.  The mother Mary Ann died of consumption at age 38 in 1838 a couple months after the death of her newborn daughter and was buried in Alcester.  Two years later, in 1840, Thomas married his second wife Jane Butler, and they had 2 children: John Whitehouse who died at age 8 and Thomas.  This Rimmer family spent their entire lives in Alcester living on Evesham Street.  Thomas died there in 1870 at age 67 by drowning in the river and was also buried in Alcester.  He left as estate valued at under £1,500 proved by William Terrill, an innkeeper in Alcester, his executor.  His needle and fishhook factory on Evesham Street in Alcester appears to have been sold in 1870[24] shortly after his death.  His second wife, Jane, died 6 months later in 1870 of dropsy at age 67.

Charles Rimmer was the eldest son of Thomas Rimmer and Mary Ann Perkins.  He was born and baptized in Alcester in 1826.  In 1856 he married Helen Eliza Steward in Wolverhampton, a town roughly 31 miles northwest of Alcester.  How they met is unknown.  Perhaps it was an arranged marriage due to the distance between the towns and the fact that Helen’s father was a physician.  By 1861 Charles was visiting the Steward family in Wolverhampton and Helen and their children were living on Priory Street in Alcester next to the Lord Nelson Inn.   Charles and Helen had 7 children born in Alcester County between 1857 and 1868: John Charles Steward, Mary Jane who died less than a year after her birth, Frances Mary who died at age 1, Louisa Mary, Theresa Mary, Agnes Mary, and Mary Helen Frances who died at age 12.  At some point between 1868[25] and 1871[26] the family and the Rimmer business moved to Alcester Road in neighboring Studley where they remained for the rest of their lives.  In 1891[27] the Rimmer family was living at Clifton House on Alcester Road in Studley.  Charles continued to work as a needle and fishhook manufacturer employer until his death of senile decay and heart failure in 1904 at age 77.  He left an estate valued at £148 to a mill manager and his wife Helen.  In 1911 Helen traveled to St Anne’s on Sea in Lancashire, a town 133 northwest of Studley, to spend some time with her great-granddaughter’s family or perhaps they were vacationing there together.  Helen died two years later of senile cardiac degeneration in 1913 in Alcester at age 85.

The eldest child and only son of Charles and Helen Rimmer was John Charles Stewart Rimmer who was born in 1857 in Alcester.  In 1879 John married Julia Teresa Chapman in Alcester and they returned to Studley where by 1881 John was working as a needle clerk, presumably in his father’s needle manufacturing business.  After his father’s death in 1904 it appears as if John took over his father’s business as he was listed as a needle clerk from 1881 to 1901 and then as a needle manufacturer employer in 1911.  John and Julia had 10 children between 1881 and 1895: Lilian Veronica who died at age 1, Elsie Gertrude, Eveline Mary, Agnes Beatrice, Julia Constance, John Charles Jr. who died at age 16, Leo Sylvester who died at age 2, Basil Alfonso who died within 6 months of his birth, Ida Clair and Gerald Isidore.  The family spent their entire adult lives in Studley and John retired from the needle manufacturing business before 1939.  Julia died in 1935 of heart failure and myocardia degeneration at age 74 followed by John 15 years later of congestive cardiac failure and coronary atheroma in 1950 at age 92.  John left as estate valued are £5,987 (approximately £252,992 today[28]).  The only surviving son of John and Julia, Gerald Isidore Rimmer, was born in 1895 in Studley and by 1911 was working as a cycling company clerk whereas in 1939 he was listed as a motor service clerk.

John Rimmer & Son Globe Works Needle Factory

The detailed map of Alcester below shows a roundabout (circular intersection) where Priory Road and Evesham Street meet with Bleachfield Street only a block away.  The John Rimmer & Son needle factory was listed in city directories or family members were listed in census records at all three of these streets but without specific addresses[29].  What is interesting to note is there is a small road named Globe Court just a few steps south of the roundabout on Evesham Street.  Also, in the center of the roundabout is a large statue of a metal globe with the words “Peace on Earth” on it.  It seems most likely that the street was named Globe Court and the statue was added to the roundabout because this is where the John Rimmer & Son needle factory was originally located.  Photographs of the area can be found in the Images section of this chapter.
