Seaman, Little & Co.: History

The Company

This linen drapery firm was established around 1861[1] and was first listed in a London City directory in 1865 as S. E. Seaman & Co. at 39 High Street in Kensington.   During the Victorian Period a “draper was originally a term for a retailer or wholesaler of cloth that was mainly used for clothing.  A draper may additionally operate as a cloth merchant or a haberdasher.”[2]  Unfortunately the original owner of this company has not been found, although it seems most likely that the business was founded by a man with the initials S. E. and the surname Seaman.  A thorough search was made on ancestry.com in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses in the London area for a man with this name and no one was found.   Additional searches were made during those same years to see if anyone else with that surname worked as a linen draper, and again no one was found.  Therefore, the focus of this history is on the company after it changed its name when a new partner was added.

S. E. Seaman & Co. became known as Seaman, Little & Co. sometime in the early 1870’s[3] when James Little became a partner.  In 1871[4] Mr. Little appeared to be the manager of the business as he was living at the firm’s 39 High Street address as the head of household with his wife and daughter A picture containing text, building, altar

“The first prize of £30 in the class of black velveteens was accorded to a superb dress in a mayen dge style, which was the costume No. 4 exhibited by Messrs. Seaman, Little & Co., of High Street, Kensington.  This dress is extremely ladylike and was considered the best in this section .  .  .  . Messrs. Seaman, Little & Co. also gained the first prize in the second class of coloured “Louis” Velveteens, their costume of ruby “Louis” Velveteen and salmon crape lisse being a truly exquisitely arranged and well executed toilette, the beauty of finish being very noticeable.”

During the 1880’s and early 1890’s the business expanded and by 1890[12] included 11, 13, 16 & 18 Ball Street.  Then in 1891[13] the firm was listed as general drapers &c at 81 & 83 High Street, 11, 13, 16 & 18 Ball Street with a branch established for mantles, costumes, & general mourning at 49 & 51 High Street.  Three years later the business was taken over by John Barker & Co. Limited in 1894[14] who purchased the entire stock of Seaman, Little, and Co., valued at £16,000 (£1,250,755 today[15]), which included high class fashionable goods, tea gowns, lingerie, children’s dresses, lace, gloves, parasols, ribbons and hose.  As a result, Seaman, Little & Co. was no longer listed in the 1895[16] London directory and Barker’s address[17] that year included 83 High Street.  The advertisement seen here by John Barker & Co. was placed in an 1894[18] London newspaper, a month after the takeover, which provides interesting information about what the company’s merchandise was like.  Note the EXTENSION OF PREMISES section in the middle of the advertisement mentions Seaman, Little & Co. and claims that the John Barker & Co. establishment was now one of the largest in the world.

The Little Owners

James Little was the youngest son of Samuel Little, a farmer from Scruton, Yorkshire.  His father Samuel was born c1801 and at age 23 in 1823 he married Judith Weighell.  They had 9 children born between 1824 and 1840 who were all baptized in Scruton: Bartholomew, Samuel, Jane, John, William, Robert, Mary, Mathew who died at age 6, and James.  Samuel and Judith spent their entire lives living on their 98-acre farm in Scruton, a village 229 miles northwest of London, a town which is believed to have been named after a Viking chieftain[20] who once lived in the area.  On two of their children’s baptismal records Samuel was listed as a farmer and freeholder[21] meaning he owned the land on which he farmed.  Judith died in 1859 at age 58 and Samuel died a year later in 1860 at age 59 and both were buried in the Scruton cemetery.  In his probate Samuel was listed as a yeoman and his estate, valued at £800 (£47,303 today[22]) was proved by the oaths of John and Robert Little who were listed as the brothers which could mean they were Samuel’s brothers or they were Samuel’s sons who were brothers.  The eldest and the youngest sons of Samuel and Judith Little moved permanently to London.  It is unclear what happened to the other sons as there were several Little families in the Scruton area and not enough information has been found to link them to their correct parents.

The eldest son, Bartholomew Little, was born and baptized in Scruton in 1824.  By the time he was 26 years old he moved to London and in 1851 was working as a drapers assistant living in a place with 39 draper assistants, 11 apprentice assistants, 5 porters and 5 servants.  Four years later in 1855 he married Martha Barrell at St. Savior in Chelsea who died before 1861 as Bartholomew was listed as a widower and linen draper that year.  A year later in 1862 he married his second wife, Elizabeth Susan Meatyard, at Christ Church in Chelsea.  Bartholomew and Elizabeth had 3 children: Alice E., Arthur J. and Martha.  The family lived in the Lambeth, Surrey section of London from at least 1871 until at least 1881 where Bartholomew worked as a linen draper and his mother-in-law lived with them.  By 1891 they moved to Hammersmith and Bartholomew was listed as a linen draper employer.  He died there in 1896 at age 72 leaving an estate of £440 to his wife.  It seems most likely that Bartholomew’s career in London as a linen draper inspired his youngest brother, James, to pursue a career in that trade.  What is unclear is why the two brothers appear to have worked for different companies.  One would expect the older brother to help the younger brother.  Perhaps Bartholomew assisted James in getting his position with S. E. Seaman & Co. which provided James with an opportunity to later become a partner in that business.

The youngest son of Samuel and Judith Little, James Little, was born in 1840 in Scruton.  By age 20 he moved to London and in 1861 was working for and living with the linen draper James Colbourne[23] at 30-32 High Street in Kensington and the Colbourne family and 22 other assistants shop drapers, 3 porters and 8 servants.  Apparently, they all lived together in Mr. Colbourne’s business which most likely was a factory building with space upstairs for residential use.  In 1866 James married Isabel Davies at Thurnham, Kent, 40 miles southeast of London.   In 1871 they were living at 39 High Street in Kensington, the same address S. E. Seaman & Co. had in 1865[24], with 25 others who appear to be workers.  James and Isabel had one child, Isabel Mary, born in 1869 and three years later in 1872 Isabel, the mother, died at age 29 and was buried at the Brompton Cemetery.  Two years after her death, in 1874, James married his second wife, Ellen Colbourne, who was the daughter of his first employer in London, at Herne Bay, Blean, Kent, 58 miles southeast of London.  James and Ellen lived in the Kensington section of London where their 5 children were born: James Edward, Alec Colbourne, Muriel Judith, Ralph Colbourne and Guy Colbourne.  In 1881 they were living at the same address as the Seaman, Little & Co. presumably on the upper floors of the building, whereas by 1891 they moved to another place in Kensington where they had a nurse, parlor maid and housemaid.  Ellen died in 1899 at age 46 while living in Cliftonville, Kent, a town on the coast 75 miles southwest of London.  According to her probate record she lived there at a house named Colintraive and left an estate of £1,795 to her husband and her son Alec, who was an architect.  Possibly she was living there in an attempt to help her recover from an illness which would explain why she died so young and why the family had a nurse living with them in 1891.  Ellen was buried at a cemetery in neighboring Margate.  James continued to live at his Kensington residence for a few more years, then retired and by 1911 was living in the Fulham section of west London as a boarder.  Later he moved to New Church Street in Hove, Sussex, a town along the coast 51 miles south of London where he died in 1921 at age 80.  James left as estate of £220.  Of his 4 sons, information about only 3 has been located and none worked as linen drapers.  Alec Colbourne Little became an architect, Ralph Colbourne Little became an estate agent and the youngest, Guy Colbourne Little, became a chartered secretary.
