Facts
The dog was the first animal domesticated by humans and is considered "man's best friend". The Shetland Sheepdog shown below is named
Prince. He is one of 75 therapy dogs at a local hospital where he visits hundreds of patients each year. In addition, Prince goes
to a shopping mall several times a year to fundraise for the hospital’s Animal Assisted Therapy program. Click on the photo to see a
larger picture of Prince.
History
All domesticated dogs are the descendants of an extinct European wolf. Originally dogs were expected to perform some type of task to
help humans such as hunting, herding, pulling loads and providing protection. Rex, the Sheltie pictured here, is the alpha dog in his
household. On walks, Rex is always in the front watching attentively in order to protect his pack. When not on walks he paces
around the perimeter of his yard making sure nothing enters without his owner’s approval. Click on the photo to see a larger picture of
Rex.
Miscellaneous
Many of the breeds one sees today are only a few hundred years old, the result of selective breeding which focused on specific behavior
and appearance. The dog pictured below is named Avery. He can be extremely sweet and loving one minute and then seconds later
displays his considerable vocal abilities when the postal carrier has the nerve to place a few letters in the mail box. One of Avery’s
favorite activities is to sit in front of the display case that holds his owner's collection of Avery needle cases, curl up in a specific
position and pretend to be Dog on a Plinth! Click on the photo to see a larger picture of Avery.
Just for Fun
All three of the webmaster's dogs photographed on this page have won prizes and awards during various Halloween events. Here they are
representing their Scottish heritage by wearing the custom made kilts their owner created for them. Click on the photos to see a larger
picture of these Shelties in kilts.
And like real Scottsman, they wear nothing under their kilts!
