Facts
The International Exhibition of Navigation, Travel, Commerce and Manufacture was held in Liverpool, England in 1886. To most people it
was known as the Shipperiers Exhibition because its purpose was to illustrate travel by sea, land and air as well as to display exhibits related
to the manufactures and commerce of the world. The city of Liverpool was selected to host the event because it was the leading port of the
British Empire and one of the greatest ports in the world at the time. Queen Victoria opened the fair in May and it lasted until
November.
History
Because the land where the fair was to be held was marshy, the organizers purchased the giant glass and iron exhibition hall used at the
Antwerp exhibition a year earlier which resembled the Crystal Palace. It was transported to the site by ship and re-erected after the
ground was reinforced with bricks. The owner of the Lewis’s Department store in Liverpool chartered the ship the "Great Eastern" as a
marketing ploy and had it docked on the pier next to the exhibition with a huge sign which read “BUY AT LEWIS’S STORES”. The ship was
temporarily converted into a floating amusement park which entertained over half a million people during the fair.
Miscellaneous
Liverpool was originally founded in 1207 and because of its proximity to the sea became a major British port. In the 18th century
trade with the West Indies and Europe as well as links to the Atlantic slave trade contributed to the economic prosperity and expansion of
the city. The population increase dramatically in the 1840’s due to the Great Potato Famine which resulted in an increase of Irish
immigrants who by 1851 made up 25% of the population. Liverpool was also a major port for the transportation of immigrants from the
British Isles and other parts of Europe to the USA. In the 20th century the city was best known as the birthplace of the Beatles.
