Accounts and Papers: Nineteen Volumes – 14 – Trade: Corn: Post Office: Postage. Session 26 January – 22 June 1841, Vol. XXVI, 1841. Lists needle and fish-hook manufacturers from Redditch as of November 14, 1840 on pages 257-258 including John Avery, James Avery & Co and Henry Avery.
Analysis of 1841 UK census information from findmypast.co.uk
- There were 4 men in Worcestershire and 1 in Warwickshire named Henry Avery. Only one of these was a needle maker from the Redditch area.
- There were 3 men in Worcestershire and 8 in Warwickshire named James Avery. Only one of these was a needle maker from the Redditch area.
- There were 10 men in Worcestershire and 8 in Warwickshire named John Avery. Only one of these was a needle maker and another was a fish hook maker from the Redditch area.
- There were 12 men in Worcestershire and 18 in Warwickshire named William Avery. Only two of these males were needle makers from the Redditch area, one being born in 1801 and the other being the nine year old son of John Avery.
- The five Avery families (with first names equal to Henry, James, John or William) in the Redditch area of Worcestershire who were involved in the needle and/or fish hook trades were: the Henry (b.1806) and Elizabeth (b.1801) Avery family of Tardebigg, Bromsgrove; the James (b. 1781) and Sarah (b. 1806) Avery family of Tardebigg, Bromsgrove; the John (b. 1808) and Catherine (b. 1807) Avery family and their son William (b. 1832) of Headless Cross; the John (b.1811) and Martha (b. 1816) Avery family of Tardebigg, Bromsgrove; and the William (b. 1801) and Elizabeth (b. 1801) Avery family of Tardebigg, Bromsgrove.
Analysis of UK birth, marriage, death/burial information from findmypast.co.uk
- There were only 10 men named William Avery born/baptized in England between 1756 and 1761. Of these only 2 were registered in Worcestershire (one to Joseph and Mary Avery and one to William and Jane Avery) and 1 was registered in Warwickshire (to William and Jane Avery). Without additional information it is impossible to assign our William Avery (1758-1840) to one of these families. In addition there is no Charlotte Avery registered between 1764 and 1783 which, since she was William Avery’s sister, could indicate the church records for both of their births/baptisms are missing.
- There were only 6 men in Worcestershire and 12 in Warwickshire named William Avery who married between 1742-1822. Of these only one married a woman named Lucy and that marriage was in the Redditch area of these counties.
- There were only 6 men in Worcestershire and 7 in Warwickshire named William Avery who died between 1806 and 1841 who would have been old enough to be the father of a child (John Avery) born in 1807. Of these only one died and was buried in 1840. The William Avery who died in Feckenham, Alcester District, Warwickshire on December 21, 1840 is the same as the William Avery who was buried on December 25, 1840 at St. Stephens in Redditch, Worcestershire. The reason why the death is recorded in one county and the burial in another is because this William Avery lived in Headless Cross which was sometimes listed in Worcestershire and sometimes in Warwickshire whereas the St. Stephen church in Redditch was always listed as in Worcestershire.
- Only three people with the Avery surname died in 1832 in Worcestershire and Warwickshire and only 1 of these was in the Redditch area, he was a one year old boy named John.
