General Orders - Medals, Decorations and Honors

General Orders were used to award medals, decorations and honors to individual soldiers and units.  Examples include the Silver and Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman and Medical Badges, and the Good Conduct Medal.  They usually contain a description of the action for which the medal was awarded.  They can also pertain to administrative issues like organizational changes and command assignments.

This website currently has General Orders issued by the 35th Infantry Division, the 134th, 137th and 320th Infantry Regiments, the 9th, 12th, 41st, 91st and 106th Evacuation Hospitals, and Army III, XII, and XVI Corps.

PLEASE NOTE:  This is NOT a complete list of all 35th Infantry Division WWII medal and award recipients.  It only includes those whose awards and medals are indexed on the General Orders described in the sections below.

Soldiers from multiple U.S. Army units, including the 35th Infantry Division, were treated at these Evacuation Hospitals.  Purple Heart Medals were awarded by these hospitals to those treated for wounds and injuries received in combat.  Because these have not been indexed by soldier name you will need to read the entire document to determine if the soldier you are seeking is listed.

Research Tip: A Purple Heart Medal was frequently awarded well after the soldier was wounded. If you know the date wounded, start with that date and work forward.

Part 6 - III, XII and XVI Corps General Orders

During WWII the 35th Infantry Division was assigned to several different Corps.  The 35th Infantry Division was assigned to III Corp from December 26, 1944 to January 17, 1945; to XII Corps from August 13 to December 23, 1944; and to XVI Corp from January 30 to April 12, 1945.  These General Orders include awards both to soldiers permanently assigned to the Corps and to soldiers from units temporarily assigned to it, like the 35th Infantry Division.

Because these have not been indexed by soldier name you will need to read the entire document to determine if the soldier you are seeking is listed.
