Does the Coulthart family from Scotland have a tartan?
Play the music for this webpage! A tartan is a distinctive plaid textile pattern worn by the members of a Scottish clan. Most clans originated in the Scottish Highlands. The Coulthart families came from southern Scotland, from the Scottish Lowlands or the Borders, close to the border with England. Since they were not united in a clan organization, they did not have a tartan. However, if you would like to adopt a tartan you should consider selecting one that is in someway related to your Coulthart ancestors.According to Scots Kith and Kin - A Guide to the Clans & Surnames of Scotland, the following families were dominant in the areas where our Coulthart ancestors once lived. To select a tartan, you must first determine the county or "shire" from which your Coulthart ancestors came. Then click on the underlined surname to see the tartan. Pick the tartan you like best and adopt it as your own. Of course this is the North American way of selecting a tartan. I'm not sure whether the Scots would approve! My personal favorite is Turnbull. Dumfriesshire: Douglas, Maxwell, Bruce, Johnston or MacRae (if you are related to John Coulthart of Cummertrees) Kirkcudbrightshire: Maxwell Wigtownshire: Agnew, MacDougall or Kennedy Aryshire: Bruce or Wallace Lanarkshire: Crawford, Stewart or Douglas Selkirkshire: Armstrong, Bruce, Scott or Elliot Roxburghshire: Cranston, Turnbull or Oliver Berwickshire: Kerr, Young, Erskine or Lauder For more information on tartans, be sure and visit the Tartans of Scotland website. |
