James Coulthart was born near Cummertrees in Dumfries County Scotland in 1845. He was the son of Christopher Coulthart (1819-1900), a forester at Kinmount, an estate about one mile north of Cummertrees, and Margaret Graham (1816-1869). James had five brothers and sisters: Nancy, Thomas, Margaret, Christopher (1848-1918) and George (1858-1944). He moved to Liverpool, England where he married Margaret Rome Hill in 1867. The family lived in Toxteth Park Liverpool where James worked as a builder. James and Margaret had six children: James (1872), Robert (1881), Jack, Christopher, Thomas and Anne. In 1888 the family immigrated to Victoria, Australia. His brother George had immigrated to New South Wales, Australia in 1881. James died there on April 30, 1890.

• James Coulthart (1872-1940) was born in 1872 in Liverpool, England. After his family immigrated to Australia, James and his brother Thomas headed for Coolgardie, Western Austalia to work in the gold fields as young men. James returned to Sydney and married Anne Elizabeth Lyons (1882-1943) and they had five children: John (1906-1922), Francis George (1908-1982), James Thomas (1911-1974), Marjorie Eileen (1914-1932), and Annie Sheila (1918-2012). James died in 1940 in Australia.

• Robert Stewart Coulthart (1881-1930) was born on July 25, 1881 in Toxteth Park, Liverpool, England. He married Ann Simpson and they had five children: Rutherford Thomas, George, Stewart Robert, James Simpson and Gordon Simpson. Robert died in 1930 in Australia.

• Thomas Coulthart died in Perth on February 10, 1901 of dengue fever.
